Genre: Sports/Realistic
AR level: 3.9
Grade appropriate: 3rd and up

RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 3/5-- It was a fine book.  It addresses sibling rivalry and treating others with respect. (Don't worry! I won't tell the kids that! They'd never read it!)

Creativity: 3/5-- Basic sibling rivalry, nerd proves himself as an athlete and his school and family dynamics change.

Characters: 5/5-- Boys were likable and realistic.

Engrossing: 5/5-- It is definitely written for kids so while that's a good thing, Disney made for TV movies don't really appeal to me either. The kids will like it.

Writing: 3/5

Appeal to kids: 5/5-- Our kids who like the sports genre will like it and it reminded me of High School Musical (minus the romance.) If I can convince kids that's what it's like they'll give it a chance.

Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5-- Short and sweet.

 Fortunately, the Milk

Genre: Fantasy
AR level: 4.3
Grade appropriate: 2nd and up

RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 5/5-- I loved this book! It's a fantastical story told by a father to his children to explain why it took him so long to get home from the corner store with the milk for their breakfast.

Creativity: 5/5-- It is such a fun and unique premise for a story.

Characters: 5/5-- All the characters that the father meets on his trip are colorful and fun!

Engrossing: 5/5-- My son and I finished it in one day...

Writing: 5/5

Appeal to kids: 5/5-- Kids are going to love this book. I have to buy a copy for the library today!

Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5-- short!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Genre: Distopic/Science Fiction
AR level: 5.0
Grade appropriate: 9th and up (not appropriate for elementary students)

RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 4/5-- I loved the first one very much. I read it in a day and a half even with a two year old in the house. This one was good, but I waited so long between reading the first and second ones that I had a hard time getting back in the right frame of mind. I started it and then put it down, but picked it up again recently and enjoyed it very much this time.

Creativity: 4/5-- Following in the distopic pattern, but in a unique way. The society has divided into factions based around the characteristic they value most.

Characters: 4/5-- All of the main characters in this book are very angry. Usually that is quite a turn off because the reader doesn't want to hear whinning and complaining for an entire book. Somehow Roth manages to make her characters likeable and their anger justified.

Engrossing: 3/5-- I put this book down after starting it the first time.When I came back to it I was in a much better frame of mind and it was much better.

Writing: 5/5-- Veronica Roth does a great job pulling the reader in.

Appeal to kids: 5/5-- The kids in my elementary are all getting their hands on these books as quickly as possible. I have none in the elementary and will not be getting them since they are not written for elementary aged kids. I have been trying to explain this to my students but it seems that my arguments are falling on deaf ears...

Appropriate length to tell the story: 4/5--It took me a while to read this one. I had a hard time getting back into it after reading the first one. Once I got engrossed in the world again I finished it quickly.

CONTENT:
Language: mild-- I didn't note specific instances, but I feel like there were a couple of curse words.
Sexuality: medium-- lots of sensual touching and kissing
Violence: high-- lots of fighting. Tris has to kill and fight to protect her friends and the society at large.
Drugs/Alcohol: mild-- Tris is drugged to keep her from causing trouble and the Dauntless drink after being attacked to dull their senses.
~~~
Genre: Adventure
AR level: 5.3
Grade appropriate: 4th and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 4/5-- I wanted to love this book. It was funny but so tongue in cheek that it got annoying.
Creativity: 4/5-- It was fun to have a book set in a spy school set up by the CIA but there are others that I like better like the Gallager Girls series by Ally Carter
Characters: 3/5-- Again, I wanted to like Ben, but he really ended up getting on my nerves.
Engrossing: 4/5-- It was fast paced and a pretty quick read.
Writing: 3/5
Appeal to kids: 5/5-- The kids are loving this series, boys and girls alike. That's one of the reasons I felt that I needed to read it!
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5
CONTENT:
Language: mild- approx 5 instances (damn, ass)
Sexuality: none
Violence: mild--  Benjamin is a very fumbling hero who attempts to be James Bond and ends up being more Monk.
Drugs/Alcohol: none
TLA 2014-San Antonio
I just got back from the Texas Library Association Conference in San Antonio. It was fantastic. I had so much fun last year and came back so excited to share all my new found knowledge and pictures with our favorite authors and I was anxious that this year wouldn't be as amazing since I was anticipating it so much but it did not disappoint.
I met authors:
(who promptly pulled out his phone and wanted a selfie with me too!)
Who loves librarians and/or thinks I'm amazing
(as silly and hilarious as his books)
the author not the spy
And I met a celebrity or two:
 These guys may not look like celebrities to you but if you teach any children's literature these guys are (or should be) your rock stars!
 I'm thrilled if you can't tell...
and John Schu
He has a longer last name than that, but who knows it? Everyone calls him Mr. Schu.
I joined a #nerdybookclub
I read by a rooftop pool:
 Got A LOT of free books:
 And hung out with some FABULOUS ladies!
Have I mentioned lately that I have the best job in the universe?
It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
I love this series. It's so cleverly written and each clue is so carefully plotted out. I also love the characters. They are realistic as kids with flaws and quirks and still very likeable. Andrew Clements gets kids this age and he understands teachers. Both students and teachers alike can relate to all of his books.
Genre: Mystery
AR level: no test yet
Grade appropriate: 3rd grade and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 5/5
Creativity: 4/5-- There are several books out right now about kids who need to save their school but Clements was the first one I read. That made it creative in my view.
Characters: 5/5-- Love these kids! The villains are also very believable and wicked enough for you to hate them just as much as the kids.
Engrossing: 5/5-- I scoop these up as soon as the next in the series comes out. And I never feel lost no matter how long it's been since I read the last one.
Writing: 5/5
Appeal to kids: 5/5-- I always have a group of kids waiting for the next in the series to come out.
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5
I stumbled upon this book at our Scholastic book fair. It was not advertized, but just stuck on a shelf seemingly randomly. After reading the back, I fell in love! It's so precious. I wouldn't let myself read it until I had finished several that were sitting on my nightstand waiting to be finished.
It was worth the wait.
Genre:Fantasy
AR level: 5.3
Grade appropriate: 3rd grade and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 5/5-- So sweet and fun. It did get a little depressing in about the 3rd chapter because her life is so bleak, but it was just enough to make you truly sympathetic with her plight.
Creativity: 5/5-- There are so many witch/wizard books out nowadays it's hard to come up with something new. I almost gave this book a 4 for that reason. But I haven't read a single one in which the witch or wizard doesn't want to do magic. And this girl is after my own heart. Baking soothes the soul.
Characters: 5/5-- Love, love, love
Engrossing: 5/5-- I read it in record time. I had students finishing it all around me saying, "Are you done yet Mrs. Senter?"
Writing: 5/5
Appeal to kids: 5/5-- It sold out at the book fair.
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5
It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
To learn more about It's Monday! What Are You Reading? visit Mentor Texts
I'm on my way to the Texas Library Association Conference in San Antonio tomorrow so I'll have such great stories and bragging to do when I get back. I've been reading like crazy though. Here's what I've read.
6609848
What a fun book! It reminds me so heavily of books I would have read and loved as a kid! It felt very like revisiting my own childhood.
One of my favorites as a kid was The People of Pineapple Place and I have since discovered that no one else I know has read them. This series has that same magical feel.
Genre: Fantasy
AR level: 5.2
Grade appropriate: 3rd grade and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 5/5-- So fun! Even as an adult I want to live in this book.
Creativity: 5/5-- We have often wanted to escape our own reality and have an adventure but I never would have thought of this approach. I love that it happens in a museum. Again a reminder of The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
Characters: 5/5-- I truly liked Jack and Ruthie and would have wanted to be their friend.
Engrossing: 5/5
Writing: 5/5
Appeal to kids: 5/5
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5
I expected this one to be a spin-off of 39 clues but it seems to be truly different. It feels very like many other time-travel books, reminding me of a cross between an older Magic Treehouse and Margaret Petereson Haddix's The Missing series.
It will be interesting to read the rest in the series and see how they feel, all being written by different authors. I love this about the 39 clues because when I read one I particularly liked I would look for more by that author. I met several of my current favorites this way.
Genre: Science Fiction (although it could cross-over into Historical as well.)
AR level: 5.3
Grade appropriate: 4th and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 3/5-- I read this one quickly but not because I particularly loved it, but because it was so short.
Creativity: 4/5--It's so similar to many other middle-grade fiction right now. I'll have a hard time distinguishing it in my memory when some time has passed.
Characters: 3/5--I liked Sera most. Dak was ok, but Riq was just annoying.
Engrossing: 3/5
Writing: 3/5
Appeal to kids: 3/5-- I've had this series for a while and even with the computer game element to it the kids just aren't reading them like I expected. So I thought I'd better read it and see what's up. I must say I agree with their lack of interest. There are too many great books in the world to read things that aren't that great.
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5-- short is it's best selling point.
CONTENT:
Language: none
Sexuality: none
Violence: mild, the kids are captured at the beginning, but nothing really bad happens to them.
Drugs/Alcohol: none
This book was so interesting, especially in retrospect. I had a hard time getting through it, but as soon as I was through I began to think and talk about how good it was and what a unique perspective it gave on the 60's. I can't wait for my mom to read it and tell me what she remembers about this time in history.
Genre: Historical Fiction
AR level: 4.4
Grade appropriate: 3rd grade and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 3/5-- It was slow and I wasn't all that in love with Franny or her family.
Creativity: 5/5-- I liked seeing the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis from a 4th grader's perspective.
Characters: 3/5-- Selfish and while they do grow less so as the book goes on, I had a hard time connecting with them.
Engrossing: 3/5
Writing: 4/5
Appeal to kids: 3/5
Appropriate length to tell the story: 4/5
CONTENT:
Language: none
Sexuality: none
Violence: none
Drugs/Alcohol: none, parents smoke as does everyone else in the 60's.
 I was so surprised by this book. I have had it on my "to-read" list for a while, but didn't have high hopes for it. When I finally picked it up I was so impressed. It's a classic. Originally published in 1954.
It is a ghost story but such a delightful one. There is one truly scary point, but it all ends happily.
Genre: Fantasy
(I'll probably put it in Scary in our library since I try to be sensitive about ghosts and zombies and the like.)
AR level:  5.3
Grade appropriate: 4th and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 5/5-- I loved this book and finished it in two days.
Creativity: 5/5-- I loved the creepy, cozy old house where Mrs. Oldknow lives and I wanted to slip inside the pages and read by her fire.
Characters: 5/5-- Loved Tolly and Mrs. Oldknow, as well as the old grounds keeper
Engrossing: 5/5
Writing: 5/5-- Beautiful
Appeal to kids: 3/5-- Being so old it will be a hard sell, but I know a few who will read it just because I suggest it and they can start the buzz about it.
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5
Language: none
Sexuality: none
Violence: none
No Passengers Beyond This Point
This book deals with some serious issues. The children's dad dies before the book starts and their house is being foreclosed on by the bank. They are all dealing with their own selfishness and when they end up in Falling Bird the selfishness begins to have a spotlight on it. Each child has to decide what to do when presented with everything they've ever wanted. In the end it's action-packed, Enough to satisfy our kids who are not ready for the Divergent series but want it so bad.
Genre: Fantasy
AR level: 4.9
Grade appropriate: 4th grade and up
RATING BREAKDOWN:
Overall: 4/5-- Good story with a great moral. The kids all find out what they are made of and who matters most to them.
Creativity: 5/5 Very detailed story and very unusual.
Characters: 4/5-- I liked the characters although India takes a LONG time to come around.
Engrossing: 5/5-- I listened to this one on audio and the last disc was missing. I found the paper copy in our library to finish it.
Writing: 5/5
Appeal to kids: 4/5-- Kids are going to have a little harder time sinking their teeth into this one.
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5
Language: none
Sexuality: none
Violence: none
A Whole Month!
It has been an ENTIRE month since I last blogged. That is unacceptable! I can give you my excuses (vacation, book fair, stomach bug, spring break) but the truth is I don't have an excuse.
We just wrapped up the Scholastic Book Fair Around here.
It's was a Book Fiesta!
Our sales were off the charts for a spring fair and it's all due to my parent volunteers and the amazing parents and kids of FWC.
